Our Services

We pride ourselves on being both counselors and litigators. We believe each role complements and enhances the other. As counselors, we offer advice and guidance that have been battle-tested through litigation. As litigators, we fight for our clients while remaining mindful of their broader business concerns.

Litigation. Our lawyers are exceptional litigators with substantial experience successfully representing clients in state and federal court and before regulatory agencies, including the Washington Human Rights Commission, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries, the Alaska Commission for Human Rights, the California Fair Employment & Housing Commission, the Department of Labor, the Public Employment Relations Commission, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the National Labor Relations Board. While our attorneys are skilled trial lawyers, we have a particularly impressive record of dismissing cases on summary judgment. We also have significant experience with arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Counseling. We believe in the adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Therefore, we spend considerable time and energy educating clients to avoid mistakes that lead to lawsuits. We provide on-site training, issue periodic informational mailings, publish two newsletters—the "Employment Law Bulletin" and the "Labor Law Bulletin"—and stay in close contact with our clients to identify and resolve issues before they become lawsuits. We help establish human resource infrastructures and advise clients on the full range of state, federal and international employment and labor matters, including, for example, unfair competition, trade secret protection, personnel policies and procedures, internal investigations, accommodation and discharge issues, wage and hour law, regulatory compliance, and the implications of major business actions such as expansions, reorganizations, reductions in force, closings, and mergers and acquisitions.

Education.  Our attorneys frequently speak at local, regional and national professional conferences.  For example, we have been invited to speak at the University of Washington Extension Program, the Housing And Development Law Institute Conference, the Association of Washington Business’ Annual Conference, the Washington Public Employers Labor Relations Association Conference, the Association of Washington Cities Annual Labor Relations Institute, the Northwest Occupational Health Conference, the National Conference of Gender And The Law, the Association of Washington Housing Authorities’ Annual Conference, the Washington State Bar Association’s "Best of CLE," the Washington State Bar Associations Annual Employment Law Institute (which we co-chair), and Washington Trial Lawyers’ Association Conference.

We also frequently speak at local and regional conferences sponsored by private education services, including Law Seminars International, The Seminar Group, The Council on Education in Management, Lorman Education Services and Valley Educational Institute.

Finally, we give many on-site workshops and training seminars for clients. Topics have included: "The Interplay Between the FMLA, the IIA and the ADA," "An Overview of The FMLA," "Conducting Internal Investigations," "EEO Updates: Trends and Recent Developments," "Reductions In Force: Reducing Staff Without Creating Lawsuits," "The 10 Commandments of Effective, Lawful Management," "Managing The Problem Employee," and "Sexual Harassment: What It Is And What It Isn’t."   Employers to whom we have made these and other presentations include Pacific Medical Centers, Sisters of Providence, Barclay Dean Construction, Mulvanny Partnership Architects, Inc., Providence Medical Center of Alaska and Fisher Mills, Inc.
